Another creative love of mine – Boxes!
I have so many boxes. My son used to give me his empty cigar boxes. I’ve also found many cool boxes. Some have been in the family, such as the silverware box featured in this post.
It’s funny! As I look around my room, I notice that my furnishings are mostly boxes. These include a cedar chest, dressers, book cases, filing cabinets, art cabinets, and drawers. Wherever and whatever I can stick stuff into is a box! What I really love to do is to take a box and make it into something more. I try to give it new life or new meaning.
The silverware box belonged to my mother. I don’t think I ever saw silverware in it. But my mother let me play with it, and as a child I was mesmerized by it. It must be close to 100 years old.

Most of the fabric inside the box was ruined and I discarded it. I was able to keep the red velvety fabric that lines the inner sides. I sanded and varnished the outside of the box. I added two wooden bees. I painted and glued them on top. I also painted a bee for the inside cover and made a soft silky pillow to protect important precious things.

Lastly I lined the inside bottom with bee design tissue. I covered the bottom bottom with handmade bee inspired paper from Nepal. I call it my “Bee Box.” It is designed to hold a deck of tarot cards in the purple velvet bag. It can also hold other gems or crystals.

My “BEE BOX”

OMG! How wonderful and amazingly beautiful!

What a beautiful idea! I’m aso an invetrate collector of boxes but have never seen anything as lovely as this. And I have my mother’s “cutlery canteen” (no idea why it’s called a “canteen” in England – maybe it isn’t any more) which I remember in my childhood held never-used fish-knives and now is empty. Surely I can make something of it? Thanks for the inspiration!
