Doodle 1 – 9″ x 12″ sketchbook – in neon lighting

We are blessed! Having the ability to sit and be creative is truly special. To play and make something from a blank piece of paper is magic.

I titled this post ‘When in Doubt – Doodle.’ When I’m in that headspace where I don’t know anything, and I’m feeling lost, my go-to is to doodle. It doesn’t matter how big or how little the issues are. It doesn’t matter what the issues are. Doodling is the most productive thing I can do. Life is going on day by day, and there’s nothing life threatening. Right now, I’m feeling overwhelmed with packing for another move. My dog is not feeling well. A huge ice storm has closed things down and blocked me in. The list goes on. There is so much information from technology. Every day could be considered a crisis if one chooses.

Before I discovered my love for geometry I would just put pencil to the middle of my paper and let my mind wander and my hand follow. Since I started with some geometry, in this case circles, I’m calling these drawings ‘Structural Doodling’. We can call my old drawings ‘Stream of Consciousness’ drawings. I’m adding a few of them at the end of this post. It’s important not to censor when doodling. It’s equally important not to judge or come to conclusions when reviewing one’s doodles.

A couple things that are different with Doodle I and Doodle 2. I started with simple circular geometry. In both pieces I explored some new pencils. Some were metallic. Others were pastel neon. I added a very dark black pencil. I also experimented with color blending of neon pencils.

Here’s doodle 1, both upside down and downside up.

They feel really different. You can see in the neon photo at the top of this post that metallic pencils don’t show up. This is not necessarily good or bad.

This next one is Doodle 2 in normal lighting and in neon (black) lighting. I have nothing to say about what they mean or why the images came to me the way they did. It’s all exploratory.

As I mentioned, I’ve just started packing to move again. I think there might be a future book in the making. I could title it: ’41 Moves’. The art room is getting packed. Today, I will choose what materials I will keep out and use for the next 4 months.

As promised, the following are ‘Stream of Consciousness Drawings’ from my past.

One thing I learned when I was working as an Art Therapist. Anyone who tries to describe another person’s artwork reveals more about themselves.
