In painting Archetypes and Mythic Figures, my art represents my experiential telling of their stories, how they feel to me and affect me.
Lilith is about self empowerment and about owning that which is hidden and has been shoved down.
Lilith is associated with the dark moon. The times when the moon can’t be seen and we rely on our instincts to figure things out. Both the snake and the owl can represent darker scary things that one doesn’t want to deal with. But in mythical lore they also represent wisdom and choices.
I represent Lilith here with blood red lilies, snake, owl and a couple of her sigils. Researching her online, she goes back as far as the Sumerians. There are many telling’s of who she is and where she comes from. It is with the Jewish Folklore that she is revealed as Adam’ first wife (and equal). But her unwillingness to be subservient to Adam, marks her as a demoness. The word lilith appears only once in the bible describing her as a screech owl.
Today she is more of a symbol of female independence, power and defiance of patriarchal structures.
