When it comes to being an artist, I paint what grabs my attention. Every location on planet earth has something amazing to show. When I lived in Virginia a few years ago, the colors of green in the landscape captured my attention. I’m back in Virginia and I am still floored by the color green. When we moved to Colorado, we bought a house near Garden of the Gods. Pikes Peak loomed in the background and I was captivated. The Garden is majestic, filled with unlimited changes in color and form. Every day my dog Katja and I took very lengthy walks and went exploring. There are 20 some miles of hiking trails and many unique places to sit and observe the Garden. I have easily accumulated a thousand photos. They range from the tiniest flower to the long-horned sheep that might wander onto the trail at any time.

Painting of Pikes Peak in the background from Niaroba Trail
Pikes Peak from Nairoba Trail – 30″ x 24″ Oil on stretched canvas = Artist Susan Krieg

These are two of my largest landscapes thus far. I often made small value sketches on site, called Notans, and completed the paintings in my studio. You have to climb up a fairly steep path to get to Nairoba Trail. The trail winds around and it feels like you’re walking on top of a giant dragon. One side you can see Pikes Peak in the background and on the other side is an elementary school and a bunch of houses.

The site of these two locations is less than a mile apart yet you can see how vastly different the scenery is.

Many of my smaller landscape paintings from Virginia and Colorado are blacklight paintings. See them in the blacklight category on the right side of the screen.
